Fused Filament Fabrication Printing Technology in 3D Printers

Learn about the FFF or FDM printing technology in 3D printers so you can buy the right printer that meets your needs.

There are many types of 3D printers in Canada, such as SLA printers, resin printers, and more, that use different technologies. However, printers using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technology are widely popular. It helps to learn about them so you can choose a printer that suits your requirements.

Before we look at this 3D printing technology, let’s check out a few things you must consider when buying a 3D printer in Canada.

Important Aspects to Choose the Right 3D Printer for Your Needs

  • The cost of the printer
  • Printing speed
  • Print quality
  • The capability of the printer
  • Your printing goals and expectations

Fused Deposition Modeling 3D Printing Technology

Scott Crump developed this process, which is also known as Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). Stratasys Ltd then implemented it in the 1980s. Since then, other organizations have also adopted similar technologies under different names to produce the desired results. The 3D printers using this technology have a thermoplastic filament. They melt it, extrude it through a nozzle, and deposit it in layers from bottom to top to create a three-dimensional product.

How FDM or FFF Technology Works

CAD Files

An FDM 3D printer typically uses computer-aided design (CAD) files. You need to convert the CAD file to a format, such as .STL format, that is compatible with a 3D printer.

Printing Materials & Nozzles

FDM 3D printers use two types of materials:

  • Support Material - that supports the object when it is being printed
  • Modeling Material - which constitutes the finished object

These elements are in the form of filaments. They are separated from a coil and inserted through an extrusion nozzle. The nozzle helps to melt the filaments or the plastic threads and projects them onto a base. You can control these components using a computer.

Forming the Object

In a typical FDM or FFF printing system, the extrusion nozzle draws a cross-section of the object onto the platform. The thin layer of plastic hardens and binds to the layer beneath it. Similar layers are created to form an object as desired. The time required to print 3D objects typically depends on its size. Tall, thin objects and small ones print quickly, while larger, geometrically complex products may take longer.

Final Touches

You can remove the support materials from the printed 3D object either by soaking it in a detergent and water solution or by snapping it off by hand. You may also paint or plate it to improve its appearance and function.

Objects Made Using FDM 3D Printers

FDM printing technology is quite popular with companies in several industries such as automotive, consumer goods manufacturing, and more. It is also used to produce end-use parts, especially small, specialized manufacturing tools.

Advantages of FDM 3D Printers

  • Ideal for workshops, offices, SMEs, and private users
  • Simple machines and user-friendly
  • Fairly-priced
  • Most accessible and quickly available
  • A perfect option for beginners looking to buy a 3D printer
