For twelve years EconoFil has been the answer to one question: where do I get good filament in Canada without paying import prices? It still is. But a growing number of you print on a Bambu Lab, a Creality K-series or a Flashforge with a multi-colour unit, and you have told us what you want next: a nicer finish, a rigid spool that just works in the AMS, and a price that does not make you wince. That is Select.
What Select is
Select is our premium line, made to the same spec as EconoFil (100% virgin resin, laser-measured to plus or minus 0.05 mm, vacuum packed with desiccant) and wound on a rigid plastic spool. Three families, 24 colours, all 1.75 mm and 1 kg net:
- Select Matte PLA: 12 colours (Black, White, Gray, Blue, Naval Blue, Mint Green, Red, Orange, Yellow, Pink, Purple, Beige). A true flat matte that hides layer lines and photographs beautifully. $16.99.
- Select Silk PLA: 9 colours (Black, White, Silver, Golden, Red, Pink, Green, Blue, Purple). High-gloss, metallic-looking finish for vases, figures and anything that should catch the light. $16.99.
- Select PETG: Black, White and Red. Tough, slightly flexible, low odour, for parts that have a job to do. $14.99, the lowest price of any spooled PETG we sell.
Why a plastic spool
EconoFil ships on recycled cardboard because it is cheaper and lighter to ship, and for a plain spool holder that is the right call. Multi-material units are different. The AMS, AMS 2 Pro and AMS Lite grip the spool edge with rubber rollers; cardboard sheds fibres onto those rollers and the paper edge can slip, which is why Bambu Lab tells you to use rings on cardboard rolls. Select comes on a standard 1 kg rigid plastic spool, the same format the AMS was designed around, so it drops in with no rings, no re-spooling and no adapter, and it does not go soft or deform when the AMS 2 Pro dries it. It works in other multi-material units built around a standard 1 kg plastic spool too.
Print settings
Select Matte and Silk PLA: nozzle 190 to 210°C, bed 45 to 60°C, the same as EconoFil PLA, so your existing profile works. Select PETG: nozzle 220 to 260°C, bed 75 to 85°C, glue stick on PEI. On a Bambu Lab printer the generic PLA, PLA Silk, PLA Matte and PETG profiles all work as a starting point. Full settings are on every product page and in the temperature guide.
How it compares
We priced Select against the equivalent premium lines in Canada: matte and silk PLA at $16.99 (the same as 3D Printing Canada's Standard PLA, $2 under Bambu Lab's), and PETG at $14.99, under their Standard PETG at $15.49. And unlike the big marketplaces, Select is stocked in our own Ontario warehouse and ships within 24 hours, with free shipping across Canada over $100 and no duties or brokerage. Buy 20 or more rolls of anything, mix and match, and save $0.50 a roll automatically.
Which line should you buy?
If you print on a plain spool holder and want the lowest price per kilo in Canada, stay with EconoFil ($12.49 PLA). If you want matte or silk, or you feed from an AMS, go Select. If you run a high-speed printer at 300 mm/s and up, Hyper PLA is built for that. The PLA page compares all three side by side.
